Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has intensified his confrontation with former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, issuing a forceful statement on X defending recent security operations and sharply criticising the opposition-linked lawyer.
The remarks come amid growing political tension following reports of opposition-related detentions and alleged security operations that have drawn concern from human rights advocates and opposition figures, who are demanding accountability and clarity on the circumstances surrounding recent arrests.
In his post, Muhoozi rejected accusations that he had violated human rights and directly attacked Lukwago’s credibility, writing:
“Lukwago committed the ultimate crime. Accusing me of violating human rights when I am the biggest defender of human rights in Uganda. When I was fighting Joseph Kony in Northern Uganda he was doing nothing apart from impregnating women in Kampala.”
He further defended the actions of security forces in recent operations, framing them as necessary for safeguarding national stability and rejecting claims that the crackdown targeted opposition activity unfairly.
“Our operations against the Opposition last week are a reassurance to the great Ugandan people by the Security Forces that Uganda will NEVER be led or controlled by a foreign-sponsored political organisation!”
The statement has further escalated political tensions, with opposition voices arguing that the language used reflects deepening hostility between the state and critics of government policy.
Lukwago and his allies have previously raised concerns over alleged abductions, forced disappearances, and the use of military-linked units in civilian operations.
Human rights defenders continue to question the legality and transparency of recent security activities, urging authorities to provide clear explanations and ensure adherence to constitutional safeguards during arrests and investigations.
They warn that politically sensitive operations risk undermining public trust in state institutions.
