The arrest of opposition politician and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has continued to generate intense debate across Uganda, with Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba making fresh remarks that have further fueled public discussion.
Gen Kainerugaba, who has recently become known for his outspoken social media posts on political matters, stated that Lukwago's arrest was "long overdue" and suggested that authorities were not yet finished dealing with the veteran opposition figure.
The comments came in response to former Aruu County Member of Parliament Odonga Otto, who had expressed concern about the circumstances surrounding Lukwago’s arrest and what he described as the silence of many Ugandans regarding issues they believe deserve public attention.
Taking to his X account, Otto reflected on the temporary nature of power and leadership, arguing that political circumstances can change significantly over time. He emphasized that his concern was not necessarily about the safety of any individual leader but rather the apparent reluctance of citizens to speak out when they feel something is wrong.
In response, Gen Kainerugaba acknowledged his respect for Otto but defended the actions taken against Lukwago.
“My brother Hon. Otto, you are one of the few people I respect. Lukwago had this coming, it was a long time coming. We haven’t started on him yet,” Gen Kainerugaba wrote.
The statement quickly attracted widespread reactions online, with supporters and critics offering differing views on the arrest and the CDF’s comments. GET FULL STORY HERE.
