Revealed: Why the Government Wants Lukwago and Karua Out of Besigye’s Treason Case

Fresh details have emerged indicating why Ugandan authorities are reportedly uneasy with prominent lawyers Erias Lukwago and Martha Karua representing opposition figure Kizza Besigye in his ongoing treason case.

Multiple sources familiar with the matter say the state has, in recent weeks, grown increasingly uncomfortable with the duo’s presence on Besigye’s defence team, citing both legal strategy and courtroom conduct as key concerns.

According to individuals interviewed, intermediaries allegedly reached out to Besigye and his associates, suggesting that a bail application could be favorably considered—but only if Lukwago and Karua were removed from the legal team.

The condition, sources claim, reflects deeper state reservations about the pair’s influence and approach in court.

Lukwago, who is currently in custody facing charges of misprision of treason, is reportedly viewed by state actors as overly political in his courtroom style.

Sources allege that his assertive and outspoken conduct has not sat well with judicial officers, with some preferring what they describe as a more “measured” legal approach from other defence lawyers.

Karua, on the other hand, is said to have drawn concern due to her strong courtroom presence and authoritative submissions.

Officials reportedly perceive her style as one that challenges or undermines judicial authority, a factor believed to have contributed to her recent deportation upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport.

The developments point to an increasingly complex legal and political environment surrounding Besigye’s case, with his choice of legal representation now emerging as a contentious issue.
