Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Patrick Amuriat Oboi has spoken out strongly over the ongoing investigations targeting former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, arguing that the process risks turning into political persecution rather than a genuine anti-corruption drive.
His remarks come amid heightened scrutiny following coordinated security raids, asset seizures, and financial investigations linked to allegations of corruption and unexplained wealth involving the former Speaker.
Amuriat, while addressing the matter, insisted that Among is entitled to due process and protection from public vilification as investigations continue.
“Former Speaker Anitah Among should be given justice and not scandalized the way she has been. What is happening against her is not about fighting corruption which has been in this country for the last 40 years the NRM regime has been in power; it is a fight against the level of influence she had attained,” Amuriat stated.
His comments add a political dimension to an already sensitive investigation that has seen security agencies conduct raids on properties linked to Among in Kampala and Bukedea, as well as detain several individuals connected to her office for questioning.
The opposition leader argued that corruption investigations in Uganda have often been selectively applied, questioning why similar action has not consistently been taken against other high-profile figures within the ruling establishment.
He further suggested that the intensity of the probe reflects internal power dynamics rather than a renewed institutional commitment to accountability.
Amuriat’s statement is likely to deepen debate over the legitimacy and intent of the ongoing investigations, which authorities maintain are based on credible allegations involving financial misconduct, asset declarations, and potential abuse of office during Among’s tenure as Speaker.
