“Time Spent in the Basement Is Enough,” Former RDC Pleads With Muhoozi to Forgive Erias Lukwago as He Faces Treason Charges in Court

Former Resident District Commissioner Herbert Anderson Burora has appealed to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to exercise mercy and forgive Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, citing concerns over his health and previous medical challenges.

In a public message, Burora urged restraint in how the opposition lawyer is being handled, insisting that his condition requires compassion rather than continued detention or harsh treatment.

“Muhoozi Kainerugaba forgive Erias Lukwago,” Burora stated. “One and a half years ago, he was at the verge of dropping, Kaguta Museveni ordered for his treatment because his insurance couldn't cover the bills.”

Burora further argued that Lukwago, though frequently vocal in political discourse, poses no real threat beyond his public statements. He suggested that this should inform decisions about his treatment in custody.

“He can talk too much but he can't do anything beyond talking,” he said, adding that the situation should be assessed with restraint rather than force.

He also appealed for what he described as a merciful approach, saying Lukwago had already endured enough and should not be subjected to further hardship.

“For health reasons, find it in your merciful heart and forgive him. Time spent in the basement is enough, he has learnt,” Burora stated.

Burora emphasized that Lukwago’s medical condition may not be compatible with imprisonment, urging authorities to reconsider the implications of continued detention.

“His health conditions can't manage prison,” he added.

The remarks come amid rising political tension following Lukwago’s arrest and detention, which has sparked debate across political circles and drawn concern from opposition supporters and rights advocates.

Many have called for adherence to due process and questioned the handling of opposition figures.

Burora’s intervention adds to a growing list of voices urging caution, as scrutiny increases over the treatment of political leaders in custody.

However, there has been no official response from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces or Gen. Muhoozi regarding the appeal.
