Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has issued a detailed update on the legal situation facing Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago following his appearance at Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Nyanjura, Lukwago has been formally charged with misprision of treason alongside several other individuals, including Frank Kihehere, Joel Wakayima, Dr Kizza Besigye, and Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulega among others.
“Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason along side Frank Kihehere, Joel Wakayima, Dr Kizza Besigye, Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulega among others,” Nyanjura stated in her update shared shortly after the court proceedings.
The development marks a significant escalation in the case, which had earlier been clouded by confusion following Lukwago’s transfer from Kira Division Police Station under heavy security.
His supporters had spent much of the day demanding clarity on his whereabouts and legal status before he was eventually produced in court.
Nyanjura further revealed that the legal team representing the accused persons has already moved to seek bail, citing health concerns.
The defence team is being led by senior lawyer and Member of Parliament Medard Lubega Ssegona, who is expected to argue that the accused should be released on medical grounds pending further hearing of the case.
“His lawyers led by Hon Ssegona are now applying for bail on health grounds, we wait to see whether bail will be granted,” she added.
Inside the courtroom, the proceedings were closely monitored by family members, legal representatives, and a limited number of observers, with security remaining tight throughout the session.
Reports indicate that Lukwago appeared visibly weakened, a factor that has fueled further concern among his supporters.
The case, which now involves several high-profile political and legal figures, is expected to draw significant public attention as it proceeds through the judicial system.
However, court officials have yet to provide further details on the evidence presented or the next hearing date.
Political observers note that the inclusion of prominent opposition-linked figures has heightened tensions in Kampala’s political landscape, with renewed calls for transparency and adherence to due process.
