President Yoweri Museveni has gifted the newly installed Bishop of Masindi Kitara Diocese, Rt Rev Joshua Kugonza Amooti, a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser, in a move described as a gesture of goodwill and support to the Church of Uganda.

The vehicle was officially handed over on Tuesday in Kampala by the Minister for Local Government, Balaam Ateenyi, who represented the President at the brief ceremony.

The minister said the donation underscores the government’s recognition of the role religious leaders play in shaping moral values and guiding communities.

Ateenyi noted that the President holds the Church in high regard, particularly its contribution to social development through preaching, education, and community outreach.

He cited biblical scripture to emphasize the importance of honoring church leaders, referencing 1 Timothy 5:17, which calls for elders who lead well to be accorded “double honor.”

“The President’s gesture reflects appreciation for the spiritual leadership provided by the Church. It is also a sign of continued partnership between the state and religious institutions in promoting unity and development,” Ateenyi said.

Rt Rev Kugonza Amooti, who recently assumed leadership of the Masindi Kitara Diocese, becomes one of several religious leaders who have received state recognition in various forms.

His appointment comes at a time when the Church continues to play a central role in addressing social issues, including education, health, and moral guidance.

While receiving the vehicle, the bishop expressed gratitude for the support, noting that such facilitation would enhance mobility and effectiveness in executing his pastoral duties across the diocese.

Masindi Kitara Diocese covers a wide geographical area, making transport a critical need for administrative and evangelical work.

The gesture, however, may also attract public attention amid ongoing debates about the relationship between the state and religious institutions.

Critics have in the past raised concerns over the use of public resources in supporting individual religious figures, while supporters argue that such partnerships are essential for community development.

Government officials have consistently maintained that collaboration with faith-based organizations is part of a broader strategy to strengthen service delivery at the grassroots level.

Ateenyi concluded by extending congratulations to Bishop Kugonza, expressing confidence that his leadership would be impactful and guided by faith. He also conveyed the President’s best wishes, calling for continued prayers for national leadership.
