Former Aruu County MP Odonga Otto has commented on the arrest and detention of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, warning that the case could drag on and raising concern about the prospects of bail.

Lukwago was recently remanded to Luzira Prison after being charged with treason, a move that has drawn reactions from political leaders and sections of the legal fraternity.

His bail application was denied, setting the stage for what could be a lengthy legal process.

In a message shared following the development, Otto expressed sympathy with Lukwago, describing his detention as reflective of a wider situation affecting many Ugandans.

“Your handcuffs symbolise many chains. Your tears are many tears,” he said, suggesting that Lukwago’s ordeal mirrors the struggles faced by others.

Otto also cast doubt on the chances of Lukwago securing bail soon, arguing that court efforts may not yield immediate results.

“All court applications for bail will just be pieces of paper. It will be a long episode,” he said.

Using a metaphor, Otto added that “a lion can never become vegetarian,” implying that the current approach towards opposition figures is unlikely to change in the near term.

He noted that his remarks were based on his understanding of the political environment.

The former legislator further pointed to the broader impact of the situation, saying some people are now considering leaving the country.

He also appeared to express personal concern, noting that Lukwago had returned to Luzira without him this time, before adding, “All will be well.”

Lukwago’s case continues to attract attention, with legal observers and political actors closely following the proceedings.

The outcome is expected to shape ongoing debate around justice and political space in Uganda.
