Former Kampala deputy lord mayor Doreen Nyanjura has turned to prayer for detained Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, expressing concern over his health and continued confinement.
In a prayer shared publicly, Nyanjura asked God to bring relief to Besigye as he faces illness while in detention, saying her thoughts were focused on the opposition figure and his condition.
“Where there is pain, bring relief; where there is weakness, breathe Your supernatural strength,” Nyanjura prayed, appealing for divine intervention as Besigye continues to face what she described as a difficult period.
Nyanjura also prayed for Besigye’s mental and emotional wellbeing, recalling his decades of involvement in Uganda’s political affairs and his opposition to the government of President Yoweri Museveni.
She said Besigye had sacrificed his comfort, freedom and wellbeing because of what she described as his commitment to Uganda and its people.
The former deputy lord mayor asked God to protect Besigye from the psychological effects of confinement and provide him with strength while separated from his family and supporters.
“Do not let the darkness of confinement damp his resolve,” she prayed, asking that Besigye would find comfort despite his circumstances.
Nyanjura further called for an end to what she characterised as Besigye’s prolonged suffering, appealing for his release so that he could return to his family and continue serving the people.
The prayer comes amid continued attention to Besigye’s detention and health, which have remained subjects of concern among opposition supporters and political figures in Uganda.
Besigye, a former presidential candidate and longtime critic of Museveni’s government, has spent years at the centre of Uganda’s opposition politics. His detention and legal battles have repeatedly drawn criticism from opposition figures and human rights advocates.
Nyanjura concluded her prayer by placing Besigye’s life, health and future in God’s hands, expressing faith that divine power could overcome the circumstances surrounding his detention.
Her message adds to growing public expressions of solidarity with Besigye as calls continue for his freedom and attention to his wellbeing.
