Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has responded after General Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that he will be backed to retain his position in the next Parliament.
The endorsement, made on Tuesday, followed internal consultations within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and guidance said to have been drawn from President Yoweri Museveni.
It confirmed that PLU-affiliated MPs will support Tayebwa for the Deputy Speaker position in the next Parliament.
In his response, Tayebwa thanked both Muhoozi and the President for the confidence shown in him.
“Thank you very much my senior brother and Chairman for your kind endorsement. I also want to take this opportunity to thank Mzee H.E the President for the trust and confidence in me. Looking forward to working closely and harmoniously with my senior brother Hon Oboth Oboth.”
The message comes at a time when parliamentary leadership positions are being renegotiated following signals that Speaker Anita Among had stepped aside from the Speakership race.
Her exit has triggered fresh political alignment within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and allied political structures.
Tayebwa’s endorsement effectively places him in a strong position to retain the Deputy Speaker seat, which he has held since 2022.
The backing from PLU adds weight to his bid as internal consultations continue within the ruling establishment ahead of the next Parliament.
The developments also come as Defence Minister and West Budama Central MP Jacob Oboth Oboth remains linked to discussions around the Speakership, with different political camps positioning themselves ahead of final decisions.
While endorsements are shaping the direction of the race, the final decision on parliamentary leadership will still go through party structures and parliamentary processes. Several leaders are expected to remain in the contest as negotiations continue.
Attention is now on how the ruling coalition will settle its leadership structure and whether the current alignments will hold as Parliament moves closer to its next term.
