Public debate has intensified after United States based medical doctor Jacob Otile commented on reports of items recovered from residences linked to Speaker of Parliament Anita Among during recent security operations.
Otile questioned the scale of wealth being associated with a public official, linking it to broader concerns about national priorities and government spending.
Security reports indicate that during coordinated searches at several properties in Kampala and surrounding areas, investigators recovered cash in both local and foreign currencies, luxury vehicles, electronic devices, and assorted documents.
Among the vehicles reportedly moved from one of the residences were a Rolls-Royce Cullinan and a Range Rover Sport. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the total value of the items or issued a consolidated inventory.
In his statement, Otile drew a comparison between the alleged value of the recovered assets and funding priorities in the health sector.
He said:
“A public servant has over 15BN shs (roughly $4M) worth of cars from tax payers money, countless houses filled with hard cash, limitless access to Parliament bank accounts.
In the same Country where, the budget to run the newly established Organ transplant in Uganda is about 5BN shs annually.
“We are a very stupid people and we deserve our leaders””
The remarks have triggered mixed reactions online, with some members of the public expressing concern over inequality and accountability in government, while others caution that the matter is still under investigation and no official findings have been released linking the recovered assets to wrongdoing.
Security agencies have not issued a detailed breakdown of what was taken from the properties, beyond confirming that searches were conducted and materials were documented for further analysis.
Parliament has also not released a full statement addressing the allegations surrounding the Speaker’s finances
