The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked renewed controversy after issuing a strongly worded statement directed at detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, whose prolonged imprisonment continues to draw regional attention.
In the statement circulated on social media, Muhoozi made inflammatory remarks suggesting personal retribution against Besigye, linking him to past allegations involving the alleged targeting of his father, President Yoweri Museveni.
The remarks quickly triggered debate across Uganda’s political and legal circles, with critics raising concerns over due process, fair trial rights, and the conduct of senior security officials in politically sensitive cases.
“Let me say it again! I will HANG Kizza Besigye the first chance I get to do it! He wanted to kill my father and he will not escape the punishment that he richly deserves!” the statement read, according to posts widely shared online.
The comments come at a time when Besigye remains in custody at Luzira Maximum Security Prison, where he has been held since his arrest in late 2024 on treason-related charges.
His supporters and legal team maintain that the case is politically driven and linked to his long-standing opposition to the current administration.
Human rights observers have previously warned that public statements by senior military officials could undermine judicial independence, particularly where an accused person is still facing active court proceedings.
Legal analysts argue that such remarks may raise questions about the presumption of innocence and the integrity of ongoing trials.
Besigye has separately filed legal action challenging alleged threats and statements attributed to Muhoozi, arguing that they compromise his right to a fair hearing and contribute to a hostile environment surrounding his detention and prosecution.
The latest remarks are likely to intensify political tensions in Uganda, where opposition figures have frequently accused state institutions of using security powers to suppress dissent.
